Cardiff City Crowned Terry Price Cup Champions 2014
Aug 5, 2014, 10:19 am

Cardiff defeat Swansea and are crowned Welsh Champions

Cardiff City Basketball Club have been crowned Champions of Wales by defeating Swansea Storm in the Terry Price Cup Playoff Finals.

In the group stages of the competition, Cardiff were drawn against Kenfig Cougars and reigning Terry Price Cup champions Mold Magic. The highest placed team from this first day would play off against the highest placed first team in the second group of Cardiff City Warriors, Swansea Storm and Barry Huskies.

A full City team (minus starting PF Andy St John) faced off against an extremely strong Cougars side with former Welsh team captain Mike Gregory. The game started off slow, Cougars dictating the pace most of the half with City struggling to get any real momentum going due to the controlled nature of Cougars game, which worked perfectly to keep the game close with City clinging to a 32-30 lead at the half.

After some adjustments and some honest conversations within the team at Halftime City came out and utilised their speed and strength with City Centre Gareth Priddle proving too much for Cougars to contain and causing a lot of problems inside. Cougars rallied and pushed the ball well however City had taken control of the game and in a reversal of the first half now controlled the tempo of the game.

In the second game of the competition Cardiff faced off against reigning champions Mold Magic, however it became apparent from the off that City were too much for Mold and City dominated on both ends of the floor. The first day ended with City undefeated awaiting the results from the second group with Cardiff City Warriors favourites to reach the finals, however a determined Swansea team kept up the pressure and would not give up its lead it had gained from the opening tip and knocked Cardiff City Warriors out of the finals of the cup.

Results from the first day:

Group 1

Mold Magic 56 v 65 Cougars

Cardiff City Capitals 66 v 49 Cougars

Cardiff City Capitals 72 v 48 Mold Magic

Group 2

Swansea Storm 97 v 64 Barry Huskies

Cardiff City Warriors 100 v 50 Barry Huskies

Swansea Storm 80 v 70 Cardiff City Warriors

The final was a replay of the SWBA cup final game with City facing off against Swansea Storm. The game started gritty with Swansea (minus starting point guard Ben Flook) trying to grind out a tough quarter making City pay for any mistakes, Rob Kinnear for Swansea capitalised on those mistakes with some excellent 3 point shooting, helping to give Storm an early lead.

City Rallied in the second quarter with everyone on the team contributing with good team offence and rebounds. Swansea seemed to let their heads drop a little and City went in to the half up 10 points. The start of the third Swansea came out and got two quick baskets to bring the game a little closer but City Point Guard Charis Voutsakopoulos pushed the tempo beyond Swansea and began picking the pockets of Swansea's players while still creating offensive opportunities for himself and the team.

Swansea's head dropped early in the fourth and City kept up with pressure and took a comfortable 22 point win to become 2014 Terry Price National Cup Champions. Charis Voutsakopoulos was crowned finals MVP also, in no small part to the intensity he played on both ends of the floor.

Cardiff City 81 - 59 Swansea Storm
