Basketball Wales decision made to secure future of the game in Wales
Nov 7, 2014, 12:30 pm

Dear Members

On behalf of the Board of Basketball Wales(Pelfasged Cyf),I am pleased to advise that Wales will
sign up to the British Basketball project to work alongside our colleagues from England and Scotland.

Wales has been part of the British Basketball Federation since its inception and has worked in
conjunction with our colleagues from England and Scotland to develop best practice models for the
development of the game. The British Basketball project is the collaboration of 3 home nations working together to establish a new improved framework for basketball in GB.

The Board of Basketball Wales ( Pelfasged Cyf ) based its decision to sign up to the British Basketball project as it would be in the long term interest of the game in Wales and would result in strengthening our working relationships with all our key stakeholders, potential for new funding streams, increased participation and improvements in standards across players, coaches and officials.

Should we have decided not to sign up to the British Basketball Project then there would have been
serious consequences for basketball in Wales

• FIBA has stated that by June 2016, GB will be the only federated organisation. Individual Home Nations would not be recognised federations.

• FIBA has said that a ‘No’ decision to join GB would mean immediate suspension,

• A potential breakdown in communication with Sport Wales, limited benefits for our Sponsors and no opportunity for our Member’s to participate, achieve and excel individually and collectively;

• No access to third party funding.

For British Basketball to maximise its potential it must comprise of three equal partners, therefore, the three Home Nations have made a strategic commitment to invest in development opportunities to deliver equality a cross all Home Nations.

The ‘Articles’ that will govern the operation of the new British Basketball Federation will requires unanimous agreement from its three members England, Scotland and Wales.

This is a unique opportunity to increase participation, realise achievement and for each individual to excel.

The following communication from the Board of Basketball Wales provides the detail to substantiate our decision.

I look forward to working closely with you all.

Justin Ogleby

Chairman of Basketball Wales
