Our Neigbours up North...Wales!
The basketball community in Wales has exploded in recent times but it is sometimes difficult to see how much as there tends to be a 'north-south' divide between the two poles. This has been patched due to a large extent with the Terry Price cup but the achievements of both the north and south are outstanding; this month we look at the North Wales Basketball Association and how it is expanding.
The North Wales Basketball Association was formed from the old Clywd Basketball Association in 1999. The CBA was formed in 1984 from the teams that played in the North Wales League which has its origins in the 1950’s. The league now consists of Teams from North Wales, Cheshire and the Wirral.
The North Wales Basketball Association has been organising basketball in North Wales and Wirral for the past 10 years. The Association runs leagues for all ages and abilities. We have 11 teams in our junior leagues covering under 14’s, under 16’s and under 18’s. Each of these teams focuses on player development using coaches who help players achieve their full potential whilst competing in a friendly environment.
These teams feed through to our highly competitive senior men’s league. This league also has 11 teams geographically ranging from Llandudno in the south west, to Wrexham in the east and Birkenhead in the north. Each team plays 20 league fixtures as well as participating in two cup competitions, one of which involves a handicapping system to give the weaker teams opportunities to win.
